The cover is finished in black and white, with a calm and contained feel. It’s minimal compared to what’s inside, almost like a quiet introduction. But once you open it to the January and February prompts, everything shifts. The pages burst into expressive colour, collage and mark-making — a lively contrast to the steady exterior. I love that symbolism: the outside may appear calm, but inside there are layers of movement, creativity and emotion.
For the February spread, I worked directly into this layered format, allowing the transparency and overlapping elements to become part of the design.
I worked with Dina Wakley Media Collage Papers – Faces along with the Jumbled Letters collage paper to build my foundation. I tore and arranged the papers first to get thecomposition right, then used 13@rts Multi Purpose Medium to glue the papers down securely. I love how this medium holds everything firmly in place while still allowing the collage papers to blend smoothly into the page without bubbling. It made layering quick and easy, especially when working across a double spread.
To add contrast and definition, I stamped the Fly High and You Matter stamp sets onto separate paper first, then adhered them down so the images would really stand out from the layered background. This helped create strong focal elements, especially the birds, which bring a sense of movement and freedom across the spread.
The left page leans into deeper tones and heavier collage, while the right page feels softer and more open, creating a balance between bold and delicate. I love that contrast — it mirrors the idea behind the Book of Me journal: we all carry light and shadow, strength and vulnerability.
As always, I finished with additional mark-making, splatters and layered details to keep that raw mixed-media feel I’m drawn to.
Thank you for joining me for this February prompt — I hope it encourages you to dive into your own journal and explore your layers.
