PRODUCT COMPARISON - GESSO

White vs. Clear vs. Black Gesso

If you love mixed media, you already know gesso is a must-have in your stash. But with so many options  - white, clear and black, it can be tricky to know which one to reach for. Let’s break down the differences and when to use each.

White Gesso

Best for: Classic base coating, priming, bright backgrounds.
  • Creates a smooth, opaque surface that covers patterned paper, chipboard, or canvas.

  • Brightens colours layered on top—perfect when you want paints, inks, or pastels to really pop.

  • Great “oops fixer” if you need to tone down busy paper before adding layers.

 Clear Gesso

Best for:
Preserving patterns or working with slick surfaces.

  • Transparent primer that lets the original design (like patterned paper, collage, or photos) show through.

  • Adds “tooth” so your mediums grip better—fantastic for journaling, watercolours, or over glossy papers.

  • Ideal when you don’t want to lose detail but still need a workable base.

Black Gesso

Best for: Dramatic, moody, or grunge-inspired projects.

  • Gives a deep, matte black base that makes metallics, neon paints, and bright colours glow.

  • Creates instant contrast—amazing for Halloween, industrial, or night-sky looks.

  • Can transform plain chipboard or wood into bold, ready-to-layer embellishments.

 Quick Tip:

Think of gesso like a stage:

  • White sets a fresh, bright scene.

  • Clear keeps the background in the spotlight.

  • Black adds drama and intensity.

Want to try them all? You’ll find white, clear and black gesso in the Scrappingclearly store. Perfect for experimenting with new looks this October. Stock up today!

It’s What You See

This expressive mixed-media art journal page is a visual exploration of perception, creativity, and mindfulness. A vibrant blend of colour, pattern, and symbolic imagery, the piece centres on a powerful quote that reflects its deeper message:

“It’s not what you look at that matters, but what you see.”

1. Intricate Zentangle Hand with Eye

The main focal point is a hand-drawn zentangle-style hand, detailed with symmetrical patterns and mandala-inspired linework. Embedded within the palm is a hyper-realistic eye — a striking visual metaphor for introspection, intuition, and vision beyond the surface.

2. Symbolic Quote Tag

The quote is placed deliberately at the core of the hand, surrounded by layered florals and collage ephemera. It anchors the message of the piece — shifting focus from appearance to insight.

3. Botanical & Nature Motifs

Stencilled leaves in teal, yellow, and black fade into the background, suggesting a connection to the natural world and growth. The hovering hummingbird in the top-left adds a feeling of lightness, motion, and delicate energy.

4. Bright & Bold Background

The surrounding background is rich with bold strokes of magenta, orange, yellow, and turquoise, all blending and overlapping in a loose, painterly style. These colours evoke creativity, freedom, and vibrant emotion.

5. Layered Mixed Media Techniques

   •   Acrylic paint blending and scraping

   •   Stencil work using leaf motifs and dots

   •   Ink and collage elements (flowers, tags, tape, quote pieces)

   •   Penwork & Doodling to create dimension and intricacy

   •   Border framing in distressed black for contrast and cohesion

Guide to Using Pastels in Your Scrapbooking and Mixed Media Projects

Guide to Using Pastels in Your Scrapbooking and Mixed Media Projects

Pastels are a versatile and vibrant medium that can bring depth, texture, and a soft, artistic touch to your scrapbooking and mixed media creations. Whether you prefer soft pastels, oil Pastels, or pastel pencils, this guide will help you understand how to use them effectively, choose the right colours, and incorporate them seamlessly into your projects.

Why Use Pastels in Scrapbooking and Mixed Media

Pastels offer a unique look that differs from paints or inks:

  • Soft, Blended Effects: Perfect for creating dreamy backgrounds, soft shading, and subtle gradients.

  • Vibrant Colors: Pastels allow for rich, vivid pops of color without being overpowering.

  • Texture and Dimension: They can be layered, smudged, and blended to create tactile interest on your pages.

  • Versatility: Work on paper, cardstock, mixed media boards, and even over gesso or acrylic bases.

Types of Pastels

Tips for Using Pastels in Your Projects
  • Layer Gradually: Build colors slowly to avoid overpowering your design.

  • Blend Creatively: Use fingers, sponges, or blending tools to create smooth transitions.

  • Combine with Other Mediums: Pastels work beautifully over watercolor, acrylic, ink sprays, or gesso surfaces.

  • Experiment with Textures: Mix pastels with stencils, embossing, or textured papers for interesting effects.

  • Seal Your Work: Lightly spray a fixative over finished areas to preserve your pastel work.

  • Blending Tools & AccessoriesBlending tools , sponges, and fixatives to enhance your pastel techniques.

Pastels can transform your scrapbook and mixed media projects, adding softness, dimension, and vibrant color in ways other mediums can’t. Experiment with different types, layering, and blending techniques to discover the perfect style for your creations.

Explore the full range of pastels and accessories including brands such as: Mont Marte, Jane Davenport, Semco, Pan Pastel, Prismacolor & Neocolor over at ScrappingClearly and elevate your spring-themed scrapbooking and mixed media projects with beautiful, versatile color.

I'm finding it a case of too many photos of overseas holidays and too little time to scrap.

It's a hard life I know!

I don't have any system for scrapping my photos and just use inspiration from the moodboards.

This photo from 2023 was inspired by this month's moodboard.

products I've used include
Impasto mixed with Colour Arte Silks (Emperor's gold) and scraped through a stencil.
Nuvo Mouse (Cosmic brown) and sponged through another stencil (just a subtle layer - very hard to see)

Art Like You Mean It - CHANCE TO WIN some Lisa Oxley Art

“Art Like You Mean It” - By Lisa Oxley – Curated Collective Creator 2025

This vibrant and whimsical mixed-media composition is a tribute to the soul of the artist’s studio. Centered around the motivating phrase “Art Like You Mean It”, this piece captures the essence of passion-fueled creativity, surrounded by layered textures, framed portraiture, and painterly collage.

 Key Features:

1. Immersive Artist’s Studio Setting

   •   The scene is styled like a studio wall, adorned with framed artworks, vintage wallpaper textures, and a deep blue curtain pulled aside to reveal the artist’s “inner world.”

   •   Paint brushes, canvases, and inspiration boards create a lived-in, lovingly chaotic workspace vibe.

2. Central Muse

   •   A recurring steampunk-inspired female portrait—featuring curly hair, green goggles, and a strong gaze—appears throughout the composition. This “muse” ties the theme together and offers a sense of artistic identity and reflection.

   •   Multiple reproductions of the same face in varying frames suggest self-exploration and the iterative nature of artmaking.

3. Collage & Mixed Media Layers

   •   Brick wall texture, peeling paint, old signage, art tools, and printed imagery build a richly textured background.

   •   A variety of frames and brush textures are cleverly collaged to give the illusion of depth and tactile engagement.

4. Typography as a Statement

   •   The bold, blocky typeface used in “Art Like You Mean It” acts as a commanding call-to-action—an empowering message to creatives everywhere.

Color Palette & Texture

   •   Color Palette: Earthy neutrals mixed with punchy blues, teals, soft pinks, and sepia tones. The blue curtain draws the eye, creating a dramatic theatrical edge.

   •   Texture Play: Scratches, splashes, brush strokes, and weathered walls create a raw, expressive surface a clear nod to the messy beauty of the artistic process.
